SmartOS is a hypervisor lean enough to run entirely in memory, powerful enough to run as much as you want to throw at it. Provisioning is blindingly fast, thanks to zones and ZFS file system creation.
The ZFS file system guarantees data integrity, with particular emphasis on preventing silent data corruption.
OS virtualization with highly secure sparse zones (most system software is read-only), and KVM for legacy apps, provide the most secure virtualization on the market.
Based on the illumos kernel, a descendant of Solaris - the most trusted enterprise operating system in computing history. Additionally, SmartOS runs from a live image: there's no such thing as a failed upgrade when you can simply roll back to an earlier image.
SmartOS is and will remain open source. Joyent contributes our core kernel work to the illumos project.
