The metadata service needs to be ported to Linux. It should work pretty much the same as it does on SmartOS, ideally allowing lx images to work under lxc without modification.

Currently the code lives in smartos-live/src/vm/metadata and likely has non-trivial entanglements with vminfod. We should initially aim for a fork (likely from before the vminfod integration) with an eye toward future work that may allow SmartOS and Linux to share common code. This may come by way of a vminfod port, but that is not planned in the short term.

Config-agent needs to read/store some values from mdata service.
